Department of History, Sociology and Geography [Master's Course]

The Division of History, Sociology and Geography

Ancient culture in Japan originated from the Nara Basin, where our university is located. Keeping this point in view, this department makes studies of societies, cultures and regions, focusing on broad historical, sociological and geographical issues and on globalization and computerization.

 
The Course of Studies Ancient Culture
This course includes Ancient History of Japan and China, Historical Geography, Archaeology and History of Japanese and Chinese Art. It aims at making the actual circumstances of ancient culture clear, according to the region, by the use of many kinds of materials such as ancient documents, old maps, ruins, relics and art objects. This course also aims at a high interdisciplinary approach to the ancient culture and to its regional differences.
 
The Course of Historical Studies
This course includes Japanese History, Asian History, and Western History. Its purpose is to acquire a profound understanding on history. In this course we lay stress not only on special studies of history, but also on general interdisciplinary education.
 
The Course of Social Information Studies
In Social Information Studies, students are expected to learn sociological and geographical perspectives and research methods. By doing so, we will explore various features and dynamics of post-industrialized society, such as computerization, aging and globalization.
 
The Course of Socio-Geographical and Environmental Studies
This course, including Human Geography, Physical Geography and Environmental Sociology, aims to construct new concepts and methods based on regional environment studies, focusing on interdisciplinary field studies related to culture, ethnicity, gender, environmental problems, natural disasters, etc. Students will develop the ability to understand various regional environments, and acquire knowledge and experience for international co-operation, through training for interpretation of maps, aerial photographs and satellite data, and for field surveys and computer analysis.
 
Studies in Cultural Media
Cultural media is a field, which ranges from places, things and systems that create culture to structures of their transmission. You will consider what kind of value and information cultures create and should create through cultural media, such as festivals, sightseeing, museums, and mass media.
 

[Educational Philosophy]
Keeping in mind that Nara Women's University is located in the Nara Basin, the cradle of Japan's ancient civilizations, this Department organically links studies in the fundamental fields of history, sociology, and geography from a broad range of perspectives, including history, regional characteristics, and the growth of internationalization and information technologies, without being limited by conventional academic frameworks. It offers personalized education and research, incorporating the results of the latest research in areas such as history, sociology, culture, nature, and regional studies.

[Expectations of Students]
This Department is comprised of five main courses: Studies Ancient Culture, Historical Studies, Social Information Studies, Socio-Geographical and Environmental Studies, and Studies in Cultural Media. These courses share in common the desire to accept highly motivated students with a clear awareness of issues, the capacity to independently and aggressively face the problems they encounter, and an ability to focus their attention on a wide range of related fields.

Naturally, it is assumed that students will have gained the fundamental academic skills appropriate to an undergraduate student, which will be required to enable the student to undertake specialized research and education in this Department.
After completion of this Program, students are expected to become involved in work as high-level professionals, or activities as advanced specialized professionals or researchers after completing a Doctoral Program.
